-ून पाहणे

Trying Something Out

Level 3Sounds Like ̔ūna pāhaṇē

The first verb never changes. पाहणे keeps its own tense, and in the past it matches the thing tried when that thing has no -ला.

How It Works

-ून पाहणे means "to do it and see". The first verb is in the -ून form, which does not change. The second verb, पाहणे, takes the tense.

VerbWith -ूनMeaning
घालणेघालून पाहणेtry on
चाखणेचाखून पाहणेtaste
करणेकरून पाहणेtry doing
जाणेजाऊन पाहणेtry going

In the past, पाहणे matches the thing tried when that thing has no -ला, as in any past verb with an object (a -ला object makes it neuter -ले). A third-person doer takes -ने or -नी. With तू it adds -स (पाहिलीस) and with तुम्ही it adds -त (पाहिलीत): सईने नवीन चप्पल घालून पाहिली. (चप्पल is feminine.) In the present and future it matches the speaker: मी भाजी चाखून पाहते. (a woman) मी भाजी चाखून पाहतो. (a man)

An order uses पाहा: एकदा करून पाहा. (Try it once.) A host who offers a dish says: हे खाऊन पाहा. (Try this.) A shopper who asks for a try says: हे घालून पाहू का? (May I try this on?)
