Allowing Someone to Do Something
The person who is allowed takes -
How It Works
Use -ू देणे to ask permission or to give it: मला बोलू द्या. The speaker is the one who is allowed, so the sentence uses मला.
| Meaning | Form |
|---|---|
| to a friend | तिला जाऊ दे. |
| do not let | त्याला जाऊ देऊ नका. |
Because the allowed person takes -ला, the past form of देणे is neuter: दिले. The doer takes -ने or -नी for third persons: आईने, त्याने.
Short phrases with -ू दे are common in speech: असू दे, राहू दे, जाऊ दे. Each one means “never mind” or “leave it”: राहू दे, मी करते. (Never mind, I'll do it.)
The pattern can also say “let it happen”: पाऊस पडू दे, मग जाऊ. (Let the rain fall; then we'll go.)
Softening the request with ना makes it friendlier: मला बोलू द्या ना. Use द्या with a teacher or a stranger, and दे with a child or a friend.

देत नाही makes the sentence negative.
