कोणी नाही / काही नाही

Nobody and Nothing

Level 2Sounds Like kōṇī nāhī / kāhī nāhī

कोणी is for people and काही is for things.

How It Works

Marathi builds nobody and nothing out of कोणी (someone) and काही (something) plus a negative.

PatternExampleMeaning
कोणी / काही + नाहीघरी कोणी नाही.Nobody is home.
काही + नकोमला काही नको.I don't want anything.
verb + नाहीकोणी आले नाही.Nobody came.

For a past state, use नव्हता, नव्हती or नव्हते: तिथे कोणी नव्हते. (Nobody was there.)

With another verb, the verb takes the form for the tense and नाही comes after it. In the past, the verb has its usual agreement: मी काही बोलले नाही (a woman) and मी काही बोललो नाही (a man).

Use one नाही in the clause: घरी कोणी नाही.

Questions use the same words: कोणी आले का? (Did anyone come?) The answer is कोणी आले नाही.

Examples (5)

  1. घरी कोणी नाही.

    Nobody is home.

कोणी नाही says there is no person.

  2. मला काही नको.

    I don't want anything.

काही नको says nothing is wanted.

  3. मी आज काही बोलले नाही.

I didn't say anything today. A woman is speaking.

The verb comes before नाही, and बोलले shows a woman.

  4. तिथे काही नाही.

    There is nothing there.

काही नाही says there is no thing.

  5. मी तिथे गेलो, पण कोणी नव्हते.

I went there, but nobody was there. A man is speaking.

नव्हते puts the pattern in the past.

Common Mistakes

  • Using आहे with नाही.

    घरी कोणी आहे नाही.
    घरी कोणी नाही.
