Whoever and Whatever
The first half names the open group, and the second half says what happens to it: जो कोणी अर्ज करेल, त्याला प्रवेशपत्र मिळेल.
How It Works
जो कोणी (whoever) names any person who fits the clause. जे काही (whatever) names any thing. Both work like जो … तो from Level 4, with कोणी and काही added to say that the person or thing is open.
| First half | Second half | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Whoever applies gets an admission card. |
Whatever damage there is should be reported. |
The verb in the first half is often in the future (अर्ज करेल) or the inference form (झाले असेल), because the group is not known yet.
जो changes when a case ending is added. Whoever + -ला is ज्या कोणाला, and whoever + -चा is ज्या कोणाचा: ज्या कोणाला हवे असेल, त्याने अर्ज करावा. The same happens before जे काही with an ending: ज्या काही गोष्टी मला दिल्या, त्यांबद्दल मी आभारी आहे.
The answer word agrees with what it names. A person is, for example, त्याला (him or her, when the gender is open), and a thing is ते, or त्याची, त्यात or त्यामुळे with an ending.
Official writing prefers this pattern for rules: जो कोणी नियम मोडेल, त्याच्यावर कारवाई होईल.
