How It Works

Level 4 taught जसा … तसा for manner. Doubling the pair makes it about change over time: as one thing changes, so does the other.

Check each half on its own noun. In जसजशी रात्र वाढत गेली, तसतशी थंडी वाढत गेली, both words are feminine because रात्र and थंडी are feminine.

A verb with -त गेला, -त होता or -त राहिला fits well, because the change is gradual: वाढत गेली, कळत गेला, कमी होत गेले.

The pattern works with a person as the subject too. A speaker can describe their own growth: जसजसा मी शिकत गेलो, तसतसा मराठीचा गोडवा मला कळत गेला.

Both clauses must change in step. Use जसा … तसा when the point is only how two things are alike.

The first half can also carry a time word: जसजसे वर्ष लोटले, तसतशी गावाची ओळख बदलत गेली.

    जसजसे matches the plural दिवस, and तसतशी matches the feminine काळजी.

  4. जसजसा मी शिकत गेलो, तसतसा मराठीचा गोडवा मला कळत गेला.

    As I kept learning, I came to see the sweetness of Marathi. A man is speaking.

    शिकत गेलो shows a man learning step by step.

  5. जसजशी मी मोठी होत गेले, तसतशी मला आईची किंमत कळत गेली.

    As I grew up, I came to understand my mother's worth. A woman is speaking.

    मोठी होत गेले shows a woman growing, and किंमत is feminine.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi जैसे जैसे pattern.

    जैसे जैसे वेळ गेला, वैसे वैसे राग कमी झाला.
    जसजसा वेळ गेला, तसतसा राग कमी झाला.

    The Marathi pair is written as one word each and agrees with its noun.

  • Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    जसजसा रात्र वाढली, तसतसा थंडी वाढली.
    जसजशी रात्र वाढली, तसतशी थंडी वाढली.

    रात्र and थंडी are feminine, so both words end in -शी.
