Polite Requests and Offers

Level 3Sounds Like ̔āla kā? / -̔ū kā?

Both forms are questions made with का at the end.

How It Works

Marathi turns a request or an offer into a question. का usually goes at the end.

UseFormExample
offer by मी-ू का?

उघडाल is the future for तुम्ही (you will open), and करू is the future for आम्ही (we will do). With मी, the same -ू form asks whether to do it: मी मदत करू का? The question gives the meaning would you and shall I.

Add जरा or कृपया to be even more polite: जरा खिडकी उघडाल का?

Answer an offer with हो, कर or नको: मी मदत करू का? (Shall I help? Yes, please do.) Answer a request with हो, नक्की or चालेल.

Examples (5)

Common Mistakes

  • Using the offer form for a request.

    -ू का? goes with मी, आम्ही and आपण (we). A request to तुम्ही uses -ाल का?

  • Putting का at the start.

In Marathi, का usually comes at the end of a yes-or-no question. At the start, or before the verb, it asks why.
