आपण (आदरार्थी)
Very Polite You
The same word आपण also means we, including you, so the sentence shows which one is meant.
How It Works
आपण is a very polite way to say you. It is more formal than तुम्ही. You hear it from shop staff, bank clerks, announcers and in letters. The verb is the same as with तुम्ही.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| आपण | आपण कुठे राहता? |
| आपल्याला (to you) | आपल्याला मदत हवी आहे का? |
| आपला / आपली / आपले (your) | आपले नाव काय आहे? |
| आपल्याबरोबर (with you) | आपल्याबरोबर कोण आहे? |
आपला, आपली and आपले change with the noun they describe: आपला फोन, आपली बॅग, आपले नाव.
The same word आपण also means we, including the listener: आपण चहा घेऊ. (Let's have tea.) The sentence shows which meaning is used. If the verb has the तुम्ही form (राहता, बसा, निघाल), आपण means you.
Do not use आपण with a friend or a child. For those people, use तू.
