आम्ही / आपण
Two Ways to Say We
As we, आम्ही and आपण take the same verb ending: आहोत. A very polite आपण (you) takes आहात.
How It Works
English has one word for we. Marathi asks who is in the group.
| Word | Group | Example |
|---|---|---|
| आम्ही | me and others, without you | आम्ही पुण्यात राहतो. |
| आपण | me and you, and maybe others | आपण मित्र आहोत. |
Both take आहोत for to be: आम्ही घरी आहोत, आपण इथे आहोत.
When a shopkeeper asks about your family, you answer with आम्ही, because the shopkeeper is not in the group. When you speak to a friend about the two of you, use आपण.
आपण also has a second meaning, a very polite you. The page आपण (आदरार्थी) covers it later.
