-कडे आहे / मला आहे

Having Things and Relations

Level 2Sounds Like kaḍē āhē / malā āhē

The person takes -कडे or -ला, and the thing you have is the subject of आहे.

How It Works

PersonThingRelative or state

नाही does not need to match the person, because the thing is the subject.

A name works in the same way: सईकडे चावी आहे, सईला दोन बहिणी आहेत.

Add का to ask: तुझ्याकडे वेळ आहे का? (Do you have time?) For the past, use होती, होता or होते: माझ्याकडे सायकल होती (I had a bicycle).

Learn a few common phrases whole. A fever, a headache and a cold go with -ला: तिला ताप आहे, मला सर्दी आहे.

Examples (5)

  1. माझ्याकडे सायकल आहे.

    I have a bicycle.

माझ्याकडे shows who has the bicycle.

  2. तुमच्याकडे चावी आहे का?

    Do you have the key?

तुमच्याकडे is the polite form for a thing.

  3. मला एक भाऊ आहे.

    I have a brother.

    A relative goes with मला.

  4. तिच्याकडे पैसे नाहीत.

    She has no money.

    नाहीत matches the plural पैसे.

  5. सईला दोन बहिणी आहेत.

    Sai has two sisters.

Relatives go with -ला, and आहेत matches बहिणी.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi word पास.

    माझ्या पास सायकल आहे.
    माझ्याकडे सायकल आहे.

पास is Hindi. Marathi uses -कडे, and it joins the pronoun.

  • Making आहे match the person.

    माझ्याकडे दोन सायकली आहे.
    माझ्याकडे दोन सायकली आहेत.

आहे matches the thing you have. सायकली is plural, so the verb is आहेत.
