Reading Maithili News

Level 6Sounds Like samācāraka bhāṣā

News writing packs the description before the noun and uses the passive.

How It Works

News Maithili is a style of its own. Sentences are long, and the description of a noun comes before the noun, not after it.

PieceExampleJob
Doerसरकार द्वाराby the government
Descriptionकएल गेलmade
Nounघोषणाannouncement
  • The whole phrase सरकार द्वारा कएल गेल घोषणा sits before the verb of the sentence.
  • Verbs are often passive: कएल जाएत, बाँटल गेल.
  • Words are formal: सार्वजनिक, उद्घाटन, प्रभावित.

To read it, find the main verb at the end, then work backward to see what was described. Do not translate the phrase left to right; take it as one block. After a few headlines, the pattern becomes familiar.
