पढ़ै छी
The Short Present
In speech the present often drops its त, so पढ़ैत छी becomes पढ़ै छी.
How It Works
Everyday speech shortens the present. Take -ैत and drop the त.
| Person | Full | Short |
|---|---|---|
| हम, अहाँ | पढ़ैत छी | पढ़ै छी |
| तोँ | पढ़ैत छह | पढ़ै छह |
| ओ (respected) | पढ़ैत छथि | पढ़ै छथि |
For a plain third person, the spoken form is often पढ़ैए or पढ़ै छै.
Both forms are correct. The full one is a little more careful, and the short one is what you hear at home, at the tea shop and on the phone. Neither one is more polite than the other.
Verbs whose stem changes keep the same changes: पिबैत छी becomes पिबै छी, and अबैत छी becomes अबै छी.
You can use the short form in dialogue and casual writing, and the full one in more formal writing.
