-ზე (Than)
Than
In a comparison, add -ზე to the person or thing you compare with: გიორგიზე means than Giorgi.
How It Works
The ending -ზე usually means on or about. In a comparison it means than.
| Georgian | English |
|---|---|
| ნინო გიორგიზე მაღალი არის. | Nino is taller than Giorgi. |
| თბილისი ბათუმზე დიდი არის. | Tbilisi is bigger than Batumi. |
| ჩაი ყავაზე იაფი არის. | Tea is cheaper than coffee. |
Most adjectives do not change. მაღალი means tall, and with -ზე the sentence means taller. English adds -er, but Georgian only adds -ზე to the other noun. A few words have their own form for this, such as უფროსი (older) and უკეთესი (better).
You can make the comparison stronger with უფრო (more): მატარებელი ავტობუსზე უფრო სწრაფი არის (the train is faster than the bus). Both ways are correct.
For me and you, say ჩემზე (than me) and შენზე (than you).
