On and About

Add -ზე to a noun to say on or about.

How It Works

-ზე has two main jobs:

  • place, when something is on top of something else: ჭიქა მაგიდაზე არის (the glass is on the table);
  • topic, for what you talk or read about: რაზე ლაპარაკობთ? (What are you talking about?)

To ask about the topic, add -ზე to რა: რაზე (about what).

For inside, use -ში instead. At Level 2, -ზე gets one more job: than, when you compare two things.

Examples (5)

  1. ჭიქა მაგიდაზე არის.

    The glass is on the table.

    მაგიდა adds -ზე.

  2. კატა სკამზე არის.

    The cat is on the chair.

    სკამი loses its -ი.

  3. რაზე ლაპარაკობთ?

    What are you talking about?

    რა plus -ზე asks about what.

  4. ფილმზე ვლაპარაკობთ.

    We're talking about the film.

    With a verb of talking, -ზე means about.

  5. ეს წიგნი თბილისზე არის.

    This book is about Tbilisi.

    -ზე names the topic.

Common Mistakes

  • Using -ში for on top of.

    ჭიქა მაგიდაში არის.
    ჭიქა მაგიდაზე არის.

    მაგიდაში means inside the table. For on top of, use -ზე.
