თუ ... თუ

Whether ... or

Level 5Sounds Like tu ... tu

თუ ... თუ means whether ... or: დღეს თუ ხვალ, მაინც მოვალ (today or tomorrow, I'll come anyway).

How It Works

To say whether this or that, put თუ (tu) between two choices and give the result after a comma:

  • დღეს თუ ხვალ, მაინც მოვალ. (Today or tomorrow, I'll come anyway.)
  • ზამთარში თუ ზაფხულში, ბორჯომში ყოველთვის ლამაზია. (Winter or summer, Borjomi is always beautiful.)

In careful writing, თუ often stands before each choice: თუ ფეხით, თუ ავტობუსით (whether on foot or by bus).

The choices can be whole clauses too: ჩაი იქნება თუ ყავა, ჩემთვის სულ ერთია (whether it's tea or coffee, it's all the same to me).

A common pair is დიდი თუ პატარა (old or young), meaning everyone: დიდი თუ პატარა, ყველა ცეკვავდა.

Keep it apart from თუ (if) at the start of a clause, and from თუ (or) in a question such as ჩაი გინდა თუ ყავა?
