Whether or Not

Level 3Sounds Like tu ara

End an indirect yes-or-no question with თუ არა: whether or not.

How It Works

Direct questionInside a sentence
(Is the film good?) (I don't know whether the film is good.)
(Is it raining?) (Look and see whether it's raining.)

The person changes to fit who is speaking now. If someone asks you ქართული იცი? (Do you know Georgian?), you report it as მკითხა, ქართული ვიცი თუ არა (he asked me whether I know Georgian).

Don't use რომ here. რომ means that, so არ ვიცი, რომ ნინო მოვა says I don't know that Nino will come.

A question with a question word, such as სად or როდის, needs no თუ არა: არ ვიცი, სად არის.

In speech you will also hear the verb repeated: მოვა თუ არ მოვა.

Examples (5)

I don't know whether Nino will come.

    The question keeps its future.

He asked me whether I know Georgian.

ქართული is in the nominative, as with ვიცი.

Find out whether the museum is open.

    ღია plus the short -ა.

Tell me whether you're coming or not.

    After an order.

    I don't know yet whether I'll go.

    About yourself.

Common Mistakes

  • Using რომ for whether.

რომ means that. For whether, end with თუ არა.
