Three Past Patterns
In the aorist, the I-form ends in -ე or -ი and the he-form in -ა or -ო.
How It Works
Every aorist has an I-form and a he-form, and they come in three main patterns:
| Pattern | I | He, she | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ე, -ა | დავწერე | დაწერა | wrote |
| -ე, -ა | გავაკეთე | გააკეთა | did |
| -ი, -ა | ვთქვი | თქვა | said |
| -ი, -ა | დავბრუნდი | დაბრუნდა | came back |
| -ე, -ო | დავიწყე | დაიწყო | began |
| -ე, -ო | ავიღე | აიღო | took |
The first pattern is the most common. Many becoming verbs use the second one. The third is used by a small group of common verbs, so learn them as you meet them.
The other persons follow the I-form. Add -თ for we and you all, and use -ეს for they with doing verbs: დავწერეთ, დაწერეთ, დაწერეს; დავიწყეთ, დაიწყეს.
