Which Preverb?
Each verb takes its own preverb in the future and past, so learn it with the verb.
How It Works
Most verbs add a preverb in the future and the aorist. Which one is part of the verb, the way English says get up but sit down:
| Present | Future | Past | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| წერს | დაწერს | დაწერა | write |
| აკეთებს | გააკეთებს | გააკეთა | do, make |
| ჭამს | შეჭამს | შეჭამა | eat |
| სვამს | დალევს | დალია | drink |
| კითხულობს | წაიკითხავს | წაიკითხა | read |
| აშენებს | ააშენებს | ააშენა | build |
A few verbs take no preverb at all: ნახავს (will see), იყიდის (will buy), ისწავლის (will learn).
The best habit is to learn every new verb as a pair: the present and the future he-form, such as წერს, დაწერს. Once you know the future, you also know the preverb of the past.
Putting a different preverb on a verb can change its meaning, so do not swap them freely. You will meet these at Level 4.
