Objects in the Past

Level 3

In the past, the object of a doing verb is in the nominative.

How It Works

A doing verb changes the case of its object when you move into the past.

PresentFuturePast (aorist)

In the present and future, the object takes the dative -ს. In the aorist, it takes the nominative: -ი on a consonant stem (წიგნი), and no ending on a vowel stem (ყავა).

The doer changes at the same time. In the present it is in the nominative, in the past it takes -მა: ნინო წიგნს კითხულობს, but ნინომ წიგნი წაიკითხა.

Words like this and that change too: (I'm watching this film), but (I saw this film).
