Nouns Ending in a Vowel
Nouns that end in -ა, -ე, -ო or -უ have no -ი, so endings join right after the vowel.
How It Works
| Nominative | Dative | With -ზე | With -თან |
|---|---|---|---|
| დედა | დედას | დედაზე | დედასთან |
| ნინო | ნინოს | ნინოზე | ნინოსთან |
| ხე | ხეს | ხეზე | ხესთან |
The genitive is where these nouns split into two groups:
- -ა and -ე drop the vowel and add -ის: დედა, დედის; ხე, ხის;
- -ო and -უ keep the vowel and add -ს: ნინოს წიგნი (Nino's book), მეტროს სადგური (the metro station). A few words in -ო follow the first group, such as ღვინო, ღვინის (of wine).
Names ending in -ა keep it too: ანას ჩანთა (Ana's bag).
In the plural, a final -ა drops before -ებ-: დედა, დედები. A final -ე or -ო stays: ეზო, ეზოები.
Many everyday words end in -ა: დედა, მამა, ყავა, მანქანა.
