გაუმარჯოს
Cheers and Long Live
გაუმარჯოს is a toast that means long live or to, with the person or thing in the dative.
How It Works
| Toast | Meaning |
|---|---|
| გაუმარჯოს (gaumarjos)! | Cheers! Long live! |
| გაგიმარჯოს! | To you! (and the reply to გამარჯობა) |
| გაგიმარჯოთ! | To you all! To you, said politely. |
| გაგვიმარჯოს! | To us! |
At a სუფრა (feast), the თამადა (toastmaster) gives the toasts, and each one ends with გაუმარჯოს: ბებიას გაუმარჯოს! (to Grandma!), ახალგაზრდებს გაუმარჯოს! (to the young people!)
Whoever you toast stands in the dative, because the wish is for them.
When a guest takes up the toast after the თამადა, they often say a few words of their own and end with the same გაუმარჯოს.
The form is a wish, and Georgians use it as one fixed word.
