Instead of Doing
იმის მაგივრად, რომ means instead of doing something; the action that does not happen takes the optative.
How It Works
At Level 4 you met -ის ნაცვლად (instead of) with a noun. მაგივრად means the same and is common in conversation: ჩაის მაგივრად ყავა დავლიე (I drank coffee instead of tea).
To say instead of doing, put იმის მაგივრად, რომ before a clause. The action that does not happen takes the optative, as after მინდა:
| Instead of | What happens |
|---|---|
The optative has its own person ending, so it shows who skips the action: ისწავლოს (he would study), დამეხმარო (you would help me).
A shorter way uses a verbal noun: სწავლის მაგივრად თამაშობს (instead of studying, he plays). In writing, იმის ნაცვლად, რომ works the same way.
