გარდა იმისა, რომ
Besides the Fact That
გარდა იმისა, რომ adds one fact to another: besides the fact that; after the main clause it often means except that.
How It Works
At Level 3 you met -ის გარდა (except, besides) with a noun. To add a whole fact, use გარდა იმისა, რომ (gharda imisa, rom):
გარდა იმისა, რომ ძვირია, ძალიან შორს არის. (Besides being expensive, it's very far away.)
Here გარდა stands first, and იმისა is the genitive of ის with an extra -ა, an older long ending that lives on in fixed phrases (Level 6). Both parts state facts, so both verbs keep their normal tense. You may also hear იმის გარდა, რომ.
The main clause often marks the added fact with -ც (too): ნინო კარგი ადამიანიც არის (Nino is a good person too).
When the phrase follows the main clause, it often means except that: ყველაფერი კარგად არის, გარდა იმისა, რომ ცოტა დაღლილი ვარ (everything is fine, except that I'm a little tired).
The short version გარდა ამისა (besides this, moreover) links two sentences.
