After a genitive, ნაცვლად means instead of: ჩაის ნაცვლად ყავა დავლიე (I drank coffee instead of tea).

How It Works

ნაცვლად (natsvlad) means instead of. The thing you did not choose goes first, in the genitive:

  • ჩაის ნაცვლად ყავა დავლიე. (I drank coffee instead of tea.)
  • ნინოს ნაცვლად დღეს გიორგი მოვა. (Giorgi is coming today instead of Nino.)

To say instead of doing something, use a verbal noun in the genitive. Its own object is in the genitive too: ტელევიზორის ყურების ნაცვლად წიგნი წავიკითხე (instead of watching TV, I read a book).

მაგივრად means the same and is very common in speech: ჩაის მაგივრად.

When a whole clause follows instead of, use იმის მაგივრად, რომ, which comes at Level 5.

  • Leaving the word before ნაცვლად in the nominative.

    ჩაი ნაცვლად ყავა დავლიე.
    ჩაის ნაცვლად ყავა დავლიე.

    ნაცვლად needs a genitive in front of it: ჩაის.
