အကြောင်း
Talking About Something
ဘာအကြောင်းလဲ။ asks "What is it about?"
How It Works
အကြောင်း is a noun that means "matter" or "story", so ပုဂံအကြောင်း is "the story of Bagan": everything about Bagan.
| Burmese | English |
|---|---|
| မိသားစုအကြောင်း ပြောတယ်။ | talk about family |
| ပုဂံအကြောင်း ပြောပြပါ။ | tell me about Bagan |
| အလုပ်အကြောင်း မေးတယ်။ | ask about work |
| ဒီစာအုပ်က ဘာအကြောင်းလဲ။ | What is this book about? |
Pronouns take the creaky tone before အကြောင်း: သူ့အကြောင်း (about him or her). In မြန်မာ့အစားအစာအကြောင်း (about Burmese food), the creaky tone on မြန်မာ့ goes with အစားအစာ, because it means "Burmese food".
Watch out for a word that looks close: ကြောင့် means "because of". မိုးကြောင့် is "because of the rain", while မိုးအကြောင်း is "about the rain".
To ask someone to tell you more, say ပြောပြပါဦး။ The topic can be a person, a place or a whole event: ပုဂံခရီးအကြောင်း (about the Bagan trip), မနေ့က ဖြစ်တာအကြောင်း (about what happened yesterday). The order stays the same: the topic, then အကြောင်း, then the verb.

Common Mistakes
Using အကြောင်း for "because of".
မိုးအကြောင်း နောက်ကျတယ်။မိုးကြောင့် နောက်ကျတယ်။အကြောင်း means "about". For a cause, use ကြောင့်.
