ကတည်းက
Since
To ask "since when?", say ဘယ်တုန်းကတည်းက: ဘယ်တုန်းကတည်းက ဒီမှာ နေတာလဲ။ (How long have you lived here?)
How It Works
ကတည်းက marks the starting point of something that is still true now. English often uses "have been" here; Burmese uses the ordinary ending, often with နေ.
| Starting point | English |
|---|---|
| မနက်ကတည်းက | since this morning |
| မနေ့ကတည်းက | since yesterday |
| မနှစ်ကတည်းက | since last year |
| ငယ်ငယ်ကတည်းက | since I was little |
| ရောက်ကတည်းက | since I arrived |
After a verb, the verb takes no ending: ရန်ကုန်ရောက်ကတည်းက (since I arrived in Yangon), never ရောက်တယ်ကတည်းက.
With a negative, ကတည်းက says how long something has stopped: မနှစ်ကတည်းက ဆေးလိပ်မသောက်တော့ဘူး (I haven't smoked since last year).
ကနေ also means "from", and it pairs with အထိ for a start and an end: မနက်ကနေ ညအထိ (from morning until night). For a start that reaches up to now, use ကတည်းက.
With a single finished event, ကတည်းက means "as early as": သူ မနက်ကတည်းက ထွက်သွားပြီ (He already left this morning).
A short answer can be the time and ကတည်းက alone: မနက်ကတည်းက (since this morning).
