ကနေ / အထိ
From and Until
Both work for places too: ရန်ကုန်ကနေ မန္တလေးအထိ (from Yangon to Mandalay).
How It Works
ကနေ means "from" and အထိ means "until" or "as far as". Both come after the noun.
| Start + ကနေ | End + အထိ | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ရန်ကုန်ကနေ | မန္တလေးအထိ | from Yangon to Mandalay |
| ကိုးနာရီကနေ | ငါးနာရီအထိ | from nine to five |
| တနင်္လာကနေ | သောကြာအထိ | from Monday to Friday |
Use ကနေ alone to ask where someone comes from: ဘယ်ကနေ လာတာလဲ။ In everyday speech, plain က does the same job: ရန်ကုန်က လာတယ်။ (I've come from Yangon.)
Use အထိ alone for an end time or place: ဆိုင်က ညကိုးနာရီအထိ ဖွင့်တယ်။ (The shop is open until nine at night.)
Use ကနေ alone for a start: မနက်ဖြန်ကနေ ခွင့်ယူမယ်။ (I'm taking leave from tomorrow.)
In writing, ကနေ becomes မှ, and အထိ stays the same: ရန်ကုန်မှ မန္တလေးအထိ.
To ask how far a bus goes, say ဒီကား ဘယ်အထိ သွားလဲ။ (How far does this bus go?)
