How It Works

ရာတွင် frames a news sentence. ရာ means "the place or occasion" and တွင် means "at", so the phrase reads "on the occasion of doing": အစည်းအဝေး ကျင်းပရာတွင် ဝန်ကြီး ပြောကြားသည်။ (The minister spoke at the meeting.)

It has two common uses.

  • An event: the setting is a ceremony, an opening or a meeting, and the main clause says what happened there: ဆုချီးမြှင့်ပွဲ ကျင်းပရာတွင် … မိန့်ခွန်းပြောကြားသည် (at the prize-giving ceremony, … gave a speech).
  • A task: the setting is an activity, and the main clause says what matters in it: သင်ယူရာတွင် လေ့ကျင့်ခြင်းသည် အရေးကြီးသည် (in learning, practice matters).

The verb before ရာတွင် stays bare. Write ကျင်းပရာတွင်, never ကျင်းပသည်ရာတွင်.

English often turns the setting into a phrase with "at" or "when". Translate it in whichever way sounds natural.

Older writing and formal speeches also use ရာ၌ with the same meaning.

The setting comes first and the main point second, so read the part after ရာတွင် to find the news.

    ကျင်းပရာတွင် sets the event, and the speech is the main point.

  2. ဘာသာစကား သင်ယူရာတွင် နေ့စဉ် လေ့ကျင့်ခြင်းသည် အရေးကြီးသည်။

    When you learn a language, daily practice matters.

    ရာတွင် frames a general point about learning.

  3. မီးလောင်မှုကို စုံစမ်းရာတွင် လျှပ်စစ်ဝါယာကြိုး ချို့ယွင်းမှုကြောင့် ဖြစ်ကြောင်း တွေ့ရှိရသည်။

    The investigation found that the fire was caused by faulty wiring.

    စုံစမ်းရာတွင် is the setting in which the cause was found.

  4. ခရီးသွားများကို လက်ခံရာတွင် ဟော်တယ်ဝန်ထမ်းများသည် မြန်မာ့ရိုးရာဝတ်စုံ ဝတ်ဆင်ကြသည်။

    When welcoming travelers, the hotel staff wear traditional Burmese dress.

    လက်ခံရာတွင် names the task during which they dress this way.

  5. ဆေးရုံသစ် ဖွင့်လှစ်ရာတွင် ဒေသခံ အများအပြား တက်ရောက်ကြသည်။

    Many local people attended the opening of the new hospital.

    ဖွင့်လှစ်ရာတွင် sets the opening as the scene.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the ending သည် before ရာတွင်.

    အစည်းအဝေး ကျင်းပသည်ရာတွင် ဝန်ကြီး ပြောကြားသည်။
    အစည်းအဝေး ကျင်းပရာတွင် ဝန်ကြီး ပြောကြားသည်။

    ရာတွင် follows the bare verb, with no ending.
