How It Works

News uses two endings for actions that have not finished yet.

SpeechNewsMeaning
ရှာနေတယ်။ရှာဖွေလျက်ရှိသည်။The search is going on.
ပိတ်ထားတုန်းပဲ။ပိတ်ထားဆဲ ဖြစ်သည်။It is still closed.

လျက်ရှိသည် says an action is in progress. It fits work, searches and changes over time: တိုးပွားလျက်ရှိသည် (is rising), ဆောင်ရွက်လျက်ရှိသည် (is being carried out).

ဆဲ adds the sense of "still". It comes after the verb and is followed by ဖြစ်သည်: ဆွေးနွေးဆဲ ဖြစ်သည် (talks are still going on). It can also describe a noun: ဆောက်လုပ်ဆဲ တံတားသစ် (the new bridge under construction).

Keep ရှိ in လျက်ရှိသည်. Without it, လျက် means "while" and joins two actions in one sentence: ပြုံးလျက် ပြောသည် (she said it with a smile).

A notice can join ဆဲ to a reason: ဆောင်ရွက်ဆဲဖြစ်သဖြင့် (as work is still under way). Road signs and announcements use this often.

Both forms belong to news and notices. In a spoken sentence, say နေတယ်, or နေတုန်းပဲ for "still". A news reader on the radio uses the written forms, because the report is read aloud from a written text.

  1. ပျောက်ဆုံးနေသော ကလေးကို ရှာဖွေလျက်ရှိသည်။

    The search for the missing child is still going on.

    လျက်ရှိသည် shows the search has not finished.

  2. ရေကြီးမှုကြောင့် ကျောင်းအချို့ ပိတ်ထားဆဲ ဖြစ်သည်။

    Some schools remain closed because of the flooding.

    ဆဲ ဖြစ်သည် means the schools are still closed.

  3. ဆောက်လုပ်ဆဲ တံတားသစ်သည် လာမည့်နှစ်တွင် ပြီးစီးမည်ဖြစ်သည်။

    The new bridge under construction will be finished next year.

    Before a noun, ဆဲ describes a bridge still being built.

  4. ခရီးသွားဧည့်သည် အရေအတွက် တိုးပွားလျက်ရှိသည်။

    The number of tourists is rising.

    လျက်ရှိသည် shows a change still in progress.

  5. လမ်းပြုပြင်ရေးလုပ်ငန်းများ ဆောင်ရွက်ဆဲဖြစ်သဖြင့် ယာဉ်များ ဖြည်းညှင်းစွာ မောင်းနှင်ကြရန် မေတ္တာရပ်ခံအပ်ပါသည်။

    Road repairs are still under way, so drivers are asked to drive slowly.

    ဆဲဖြစ်သဖြင့် gives the ongoing work as the reason.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping ရှိ from လျက်ရှိသည်.

    ရှာဖွေလျက်သည်။
    ရှာဖွေလျက်ရှိသည်။

    The ongoing ending is လျက်ရှိသည်. Bare လျက် only joins two actions.
