တဲ့အတိုင်း

Following What Was Said

Level 3

A noun takes အတိုင်း on its own: အစီအစဉ်အတိုင်း (as planned).

How It Works

အတိုင်း means "following" or "in line with". The part before it names what you follow: words, a picture, a plan or a guess.

FormEnglish
ဆရာ ပြောတဲ့အတိုင်းthe way the teacher said
ပုံမှာ ပြထားတဲ့အတိုင်းthe way the picture shows
ထင်တဲ့အတိုင်းပဲjust as I thought
အစီအစဉ်အတိုင်းas planned
အမှန်အတိုင်းtruthfully

After a verb, keep တဲ့: ပြောတဲ့အတိုင်း. A verb straight before အတိုင်း is wrong.

After a noun, အတိုင်း needs no တဲ့: မြေပုံအတိုင်း (following the map). ဒီအတိုင်း means "like this" or "as it is".

သလို is looser and means "like" or "as if". တဲ့အတိုင်း means following something exactly.

Teachers and recipes use it a lot: ပြောတဲ့အတိုင်း ရေးပါ (Write it the way I said), ရေးထားတဲ့အတိုင်း ချက်ပါ (Cook it the way it's written).

Add ပဲ to say "exactly": ပြောတဲ့အတိုင်းပဲ (exactly as I said).

Examples (5)

  1. ဆရာ ပြောတဲ့အတိုင်း လုပ်ပါ။

Do it the way the teacher said.

    တဲ့အတိုင်း follows the teacher's words.

  2. ကျွန်မ ထင်တဲ့အတိုင်းပဲ မိုးရွာတယ်။

It rained, just as I thought it would.

A woman speaks. ပဲ adds "exactly".

  3. ပုံမှာ ပြထားတဲ့အတိုင်း ခေါက်ပါ။

Fold it the way the picture shows.

The clause before အတိုင်း says what to follow: the picture.

  4. ကျွန်တော် အမေ ချက်တဲ့အတိုင်း ချက်ကြည့်တယ်။

I tried cooking it the way Mum does.

A man speaks. He follows his mother's way.

  5. အစီအစဉ်အတိုင်း မနက်ဖြန် ထွက်မယ်။

    We leave tomorrow as planned.

    A noun takes အတိုင်း with no တဲ့.
