ခံရ
Having Something Done to You
Many verbs take အ in front with ခံရ: ဖုန်း အခိုးခံရတယ်။ (My phone got stolen.)
How It Works
Put ခံရ after a verb when something is done to someone. The person it happened to is the subject. ခံ means "bear" or "take", so the sentence stresses what the subject had to bear.

The doer, when you name it, comes just before the verb: ခွေး in ခွေးကိုက်ခံရတယ်. Some verbs take အ in front: အခိုးခံရ, အဆူခံရ, အလိမ်ခံရ (get cheated). You can also say X V-တာ ခံရတယ်: အမေ ဆူတာ ခံရတယ် (Mom scolded me).
In conversation, ခံရ is for unpleasant things, plus a few verbs of being praised or picked: ချီးကျူးခံရတယ် (was praised), ရွေးချယ်ခံရတယ် (was chosen). For something good you receive, use ရ alone: ဆုရတယ် (I won a prize). News and formal speech use ခံရ for neutral events too.
Writing keeps the same ခံရ with the written ending: ရွေးချယ်ခံရသည်.

- ဈေးထဲမှာ ပိုက်ဆံအိတ် အခိုးခံရတယ်။
My wallet got stolen in the market.
အခိုးခံရ means "got stolen".
- နောက်ကျလို့ အမေ ဆူတာ ခံရတယ်။
I was late, so Mom scolded me.
X V-တာ ခံရတယ် names the doer, အမေ.
- ကျွန်တော် ခြင်ကိုက်ခံရလို့ ယားနေတယ်။
I got bitten by mosquitoes, so I'm itchy.
A man is speaking; ခြင် (mosquito) comes just before the verb.
- ဒေါ်ခင်ခင် ကားတိုက်ခံရပြီး ဆေးရုံရောက်နေတယ်။
Daw Khin Khin was hit by a car and is in the hospital.
ကားတိုက်ခံရ means "was hit by a car".
- ကိုကို အသင်းခေါင်းဆောင်အဖြစ် ရွေးချယ်ခံရတယ်။
Ko Ko was chosen as team leader.
A neutral event; ခံရ also fits being chosen.
Common Mistakes
Using ခံရ for something good you receive.
ဆု ခံရတယ်။ဆုရတယ်။For a prize or a gift, say ရ alone. ခံရ is for things done to you.
