ပေါ့
Of Course
After a bare verb, ပေါ့ gives friendly permission: စားပေါ့။ (Go ahead and eat.)
How It Works
ပေါ့ goes at the very end of a sentence and makes it warm and sure. Each form has its own use.
| Form | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| V-တာပေါ့ | ရတာပေါ့။ | Of course you can. |
| V-မှာပေါ့ | လာမှာပေါ့။ | Of course I'll come. |
| bare verb + ပေါ့ | စားပေါ့။ | Go ahead and eat. |
| V-မယ်ပေါ့ | ဒါဆို တွေ့မယ်ပေါ့။ | See you then. |
With တာ or မှာ, ပေါ့ answers "of course": the answer is plain to the speaker. After a bare verb, it gives friendly permission. After a plan with မယ်, it sums up what was agreed.
ပေါ့ sounds relaxed, so it suits friends, family and coworkers. With an older person or a stranger, add the polite ending for your gender: ရတာပေါ့ခင်ဗျာ (a man), ရတာပေါ့ရှင် (a woman).
Compare နော်, which asks the listener to agree, and လေ, which reminds the listener of something.
