Two Things at Once

ရင်းနဲ့ shows something that came about while you were busy with another action: စာဖတ်ရင်းနဲ့ အိပ်ပျော်သွားတယ်။ (I fell asleep while reading.)

How It Works

ရင်း links two actions done by the same person at the same time. The action with ရင်း is the background, and the action at the end is the main one.

Only the last verb takes တယ် or မယ်. The verb before ရင်း has no ending.

ရင်းနဲ့ tells how something came about while you did the first action: လမ်းလျှောက်ရင်းနဲ့ ဈေးထဲ ရောက်သွားတယ် (While I was walking, I ended up at the market).

Listen for the tone. ရင်း has a high tone and the mark း. ရင်, with no mark, means "if". One small mark changes "while I listen" into "if I listen".

For two different people, use နေတုန်း: အမေ ဟင်းချက်နေတုန်း အဖေ ထမင်းစားတယ်။

  1. သီချင်းနားထောင်ရင်း အလုပ်လုပ်တယ်။

    I work while listening to music.

    Listening is the background, and working is the main action.

  2. ကျွန်မ လက်ဖက်ရည်သောက်ရင်း သတင်းစာဖတ်တယ်။

    I read the newspaper while I drink my tea.

    A woman does both actions herself.

  3. ကျွန်တော် လမ်းလျှောက်ရင်း ဖုန်းပြောတယ်။

    I talk on the phone while I walk.

    A man speaks. Only the last verb has တယ်.

  4. အမေ ဟင်းချက်ရင်း သီချင်းဆိုတယ်။

    Mum sings while she cooks.

    Mum is the one doing both things.

  5. စာဖတ်ရင်းနဲ့ အိပ်ပျော်သွားတယ်။

    I fell asleep while reading.

    ရင်းနဲ့ shows sleep came on during the reading.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing ရင် (if) for ရင်း (while).

    သီချင်းနားထောင်ရင် အလုပ်လုပ်တယ်။
    သီချင်းနားထောင်ရင်း အလုပ်လုပ်တယ်။

    Without း the sentence means "If I listen to music, I work."

  • Using ရင်း for two different people.

    အမေ ဟင်းချက်ရင်း အဖေ ထမင်းစားတယ်။
    အမေ ဟင်းချက်နေတုန်း အဖေ ထမင်းစားတယ်။

    ရင်း needs one person doing both actions. For two people, use နေတုန်း.
