Without Doing Something
It also shows a choice of one action over another: (I didn't take the bus; I walked.)
How It Works
မ…ဘဲ says one action did not happen while another one did.
| Skipped | Done | English |
|---|---|---|
I went to school without eating. |
He left without a word. |
No sugar, please. |
In tea shops, ordering with မ… (A coffee without sugar, please).
Spell it with ဘ. ဘဲ and ပဲ sound alike here, but ပဲ means "only". Burmese writers mix them up too, so check every time.
Keep the မ. Without it, the sentence loses the "without" meaning.
It joins with ဘယ်…မှ for "without any": ဘာမှမပြောဘဲ (without saying anything), ဘယ်သူ့ကိုမှ မမေးဘဲ (without asking anyone). In speech, ဘဲနဲ့ means the same: မစားဘဲနဲ့ (without eating).
The part with ဘဲ never takes an ending of its own. Only the last verb has တယ်, မယ် or ပါ.
