Before a noun, ပြီးသား means "ready-made": ချက်ပြီးသားဟင်း (curry that's already cooked).

How It Works

ပြီးသား means "done already". It answers an offer or a question by saying the thing has been taken care of.

သိပြီးသားပဲ။I already knew that.

ပြီးပြီ reports that something is finished now: ထမင်းစားပြီးပြီ (I've eaten). ပြီးသား adds that it was done earlier, so there is nothing left to do.

ပြီး on its own means "and then". It never ends a sentence. စားပြီး။ is not a sentence; say စားပြီးပြီ or စားပြီးသားပါ.

For "not yet", use မ…သေးဘူး: မစားရသေးဘူး (I haven't eaten yet).

ပြီးသား often turns down an offer politely. When someone offers food, a man answers စားပြီးသားပါခင်ဗျာ and a woman answers စားပြီးသားပါရှင် (I've already eaten).

Between friends, ပြီးသားပဲ sounds firmer: သိပြီးသားပဲ (I knew that already).

    Before a noun, ပြီးသား means ready-made.

Common Mistakes

  • Ending a sentence with ပြီး for "already".

    ကြည့်ပြီး။
    ကြည့်ပြီးသားပါ။

    ပြီး means "and then" and needs more after it. Use ပြီးသား or ပြီးပြီ.
