आपन / अपना

One's Own: आपन and अपना

Level 2Sounds Like āpana ā apanā

आपन किताब is my own, your own or his own book, depending on who the subject is.

How It Works

SubjectWith a bare nounWith a postposition
हमआपन किताबअपना सहेली से
तूआपन नामअपना घर में
राहुलआपन कामअपना भाई के संगे

It points back to the subject of the sentence. Compare: राहुल आपन किताब पढ़त बा (his own book) and राहुल ओकर किताब पढ़त बा (somebody else's book).

आपन is the same for I, you, he and she. It shortens the sentence, so you do not need to say whose it is.

It cannot describe the subject itself. In हमार घर बड़ बा (my house is big), say हमार, not आपन.
