कि
That: कि
कि joins a verb of knowing or saying to what follows.
How It Works
कि works like English "that". It links a main clause (I know, he said, it seems) to the clause that says what.
| Main clause | With कि |
|---|---|
| हमका पता अहै | कि ऊ घरे अहै। |
| अम्मा कहिन | कि खाना तैयार अहै। |
| ऊ बतावत अहै | कि बस देर से आई। |
The second clause is said as the speaker would say it, with its own tense and person. After कहिस, Awadhi usually keeps the original words (see कहिस कि).
कि also means "or" in yes/no questions: तुम चलिहौ कि नाहीं? (Will you come or not?). It is the same word, so a speaker joins the two options with कि and the second option is usually नाहीं.
Do not add कि before every clause. Use it after verbs that report, know, sense or want something, and after a phrase like ई अहै.
