कहिस कि
Reporting What Someone Said
After कहिस कि, Awadhi usually keeps the speaker's own words.
How It Works
Awadhi usually does not shift pronouns and tenses when it reports speech. The words after कि are the original words.
| Said | Reported |
|---|---|
| "हम काल्हि आउब।" | ऊ कहिस कि हम काल्हि आउब। |
| "हम थकि गएन।" | सना कहिस कि हम थकि गएन। |
In the first row, हम still means the speaker (he), even though the reporter is someone else. English changes it to "he would come"; Awadhi keeps "I will come".
Pick कहिस for one person, कहिन for a respected person or several people (अम्मा कहिन कि ...), and कहेन or कहेव for हम and तुम.
Context shows who "I" is. If it could be confusing, name the speaker again or use the person's name inside the quote: ऊ कहिस कि अमित काल्हि आई.
Examples (4)
- ऊ कहिस कि हम काल्हि आउब।
He said that he would come tomorrow.
The quote keeps हम and आउब.
- सना कहिस कि हम थकि गएन।
Sana said that she was tired.
हम is Sana, as in her own words.
- अम्मा कहिन कि तुम जल्दी आव।
Mom said that you should come soon.
कहिन is the respectful plural.
- ऊ लोग कहिन कि हम बजार जाब।
They said that they would go to the market.
हम here means the group speaking.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Reported speech combines कहिस, कि and the speaker's own future form.
- किThat: कि
Know कि, because it joins ऊ कहिस to the words reported.
Level 3 - -इसPast with -इस: कहिस and देखिस
Know the -इस past, because कहिस is the verb that opens reported speech.
Level 2 - Future -बFuture with हम: -ब
