जइसे

As if: जइसे

Level 4Sounds Like ja'isē

जइसे means as or as if, and joins a way of doing something to a comparison.

How It Works

जइसे has two main uses.

  • As: जइसे तुम कहेव, हम वइसे किहेन. The verb in the जइसे clause tells what was true.
  • As if: ऊ अइसे बोलत अहै जइसे सब जानत होय. The verb often ends in होय, because the comparison is only imagined.

Awadhi often puts अइसे in the main clause to point forward: अइसे ... जइसे. In the other order, जइसे ... वइसे.

The spelling is जइसे and अइसे, not the Hindi जैसे and ऐसे.

Examples (4)

  1. ऊ अइसे बोलत अहै जइसे सब जानत होय।

He talks as if he knew everything.

    होय makes the comparison imagined.

  2. जइसे तुम कहेव, हम वइसे किहेन।

I did it the way you said.

जइसे ... वइसे matches the way with the way.

  3. ऊ हमका अइसे देखत रहा जइसे हम अजनबी अही।

He looked at me as if I were a stranger.

जइसे starts the comparison after अइसे.

  4. चाय अइसे पियौ जइसे अम्मा पियत अहैं।

Drink tea the way Amma drinks it.

जइसे names the way to copy.

Common Mistakes

  • Spelling the word the Hindi way.

    ऊ ऐसे बोलत अहै जैसे सब जानत होय।
    ऊ अइसे बोलत अहै जइसे सब जानत होय।

    Awadhi writes अइसे and जइसे.
