Go: যাওঁ, যোৱা, যায়

Level 1Sounds Like yā'ōm̐ / yōraā / yāẏa

মই নাযাওঁ “I do not go” is the negative of মই যাওঁ.

How It Works

The verb যা “go” has the same three forms as খা “eat”.

WhoFormExample
মই, আমিযাওঁমই যাওঁ “I go”
তুমিযোৱাতুমি ক’লৈ যোৱা? “where are you going?”
আপুনি, তেওঁ, সি, তাইযায়সি নাযায় “he does not go”

Write the তুমি form with ৱ, just like খোৱা: যোৱা. The negative prefix ন- goes before the verb and copies its vowel: নাযাওঁ, নাযায়. A variant with নে-, such as নেযাওঁ, also exists.

The question word ক’লৈ “where to” comes before the verb: আপুনি ক’লৈ যায়? “where are you going?”.

Examples (5)

  1. মই যাওঁ।

    I go.

    মই takes the form যাওঁ.

  2. তুমি ক’লৈ যোৱা?

Where are you going? (to a friend)

ক’লৈ means “where to”, and with তুমি the stem becomes যো- with ৱ before -া.

  3. আপুনি ক’লৈ যায়?

    Where are you going? (respectful)

আপুনি takes যায়, where the ending is written য় after the vowel.

  4. সি নাযায়।

    He does not go.

The negative prefix না- goes before যায়.

  5. মই নাযাওঁ।

    I do not go.

The same prefix goes before যাওঁ.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the ending for সি with তুমি.

    তুমি ক’লৈ যায়?
    তুমি ক’লৈ যোৱা?

    After তুমি the form is যোৱা. The form যায় is for আপুনি, তেওঁ, সি and তাই.
