ক’ত

Where

Level 1Sounds Like ka’ta

ক’ত means “where”: বাথৰুম ক’ত আছে? “where is the bathroom?”.

How It Works

ক’ত stands in the place of the answer, which is a place word. The thing you ask about comes first.

QuestionAnswer
বাথৰুম ক’ত আছে?বাথৰুম ইয়াত আছে। “The bathroom is here.” or just ইয়াত। “Here.”
তুমি ক’ত আছা? “Where are you?”মই ঘৰত আছোঁ। “I am at home.”

The answer to ক’ত usually carries the ending -ত, as in ঘৰত, so the question and the answer fit together.

Write the apostrophe: ক’ত is “where”. The word কত without it is a different word that means “how many”.

The verb changes the question. তুমি ক’ত আছা? asks where you are right now. আপুনি ক’ত থাকে? asks where you live.

Examples (5)

  1. বাথৰুম ক’ত আছে?

    Where is the bathroom?

ক’ত stands in front of আছে.

  2. তোমাৰ স্কুলখন ক’ত?

    Where is your school?

The verb is left out, so ক’ত ends the question.

  3. তুমি ক’ত আছা?

    Where are you?

তুমি takes the verb ending -া in আছা.

  4. আপুনি ক’ত থাকে?

    Where do you live?

আপুনি takes -ে, and থাকে means “lives” or “stays”.

  5. ক’ত বিষায়?

    Where does it hurt?

ক’ত comes first, and the verb বিষায় “hurts” follows.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the apostrophe.

    বাথৰুম কত আছে?
    বাথৰুম ক’ত আছে?

Without the mark, কত means “how many”. The question would ask how many bathrooms there are.
