গ’ল / হ’ল / আহিল

Third-Person Past: -ল and -লে

Level 3Sounds Like ga’la / ha’la / āhila

The past for সি, তাই and তেওঁ ends in -লে, as in দেউতাই না বুলি ক’লে “my father said no”. A few verbs take -ল: শীতকাল আহিল “winter came”.

How It Works

The third-person past has two shapes. The -লে shape is the usual one, and the -ল shape is the habit of a few short, very common verbs.

VerbUsual pastMeaning
কিন-কিনিলেbought
দি-দিলেgave
ক-ক’লেsaid
যা-গ’লwent
আহ-আহিলcame
সোম-সোমালwent in
হ-হ’লbecame

With আপুনি the past usually ends in -লে. Look at the end of the word: গ’লে, হ’লে and আহিলে can also mean “if” or “when”, which you will meet at a later level. The sentence around the word tells you which one it is.

    She just left.

আহিল is the -ল form of “came”.

  3. মোৰ দেউতা বুঢ়া হ’ল।

    হ’ল means “became”.

  4. দেউতাই না বুলি ক’লে।

ক’লে takes -লে, like most verbs.

  5. সি আহিলে, দেখিলে - আৰু একো নক’লে।

He came, he saw, and said nothing.

আহিলে shows that -লে is also heard on this verb.
