If … Then …

Level 5Sounds Like yadi … tēntē

যদি … তেন্তে … means “if … then …”.

How It Works

Put the “if” word near the start of the first part and the “then” word at the start of the second part.

PartWordMeans
Conditionযদিif
Resultতেন্তেthen
Resultতেনেহ’লেthen, in that case

যদি can follow the subject too: তোমাৰ যদি ইমানেই শীত লাগিছে, তেন্তে তুমি চাদৰখন নোলোৱা কিয়? “if you are that cold, why don’t you take the shawl?”. The condition can be a plain present: যদি নাজমাৰ ইচ্ছা নাই তেনেহ’লে তাই নাযাব “if Nazma does not want to, she will not go”.

The result can be a statement, a question or a command, as in তেনেহ’লে অলপ জিৰণি লোৱাঁ “then take a little rest”.

Examples (4)

  1. যদি আপুনি সোনকালে আহে তেন্তে ভাল ঠাই পাব।

If you come early, you will get a good place.

যদি opens the condition and তেন্তে opens the result.

  2. যদি তুমি বজাৰলৈ যোৱা, তেনেহ’লে মোৰ বাবে মাছ কিনি আনিবা।

If you are going to the market, then buy me some fish.

তেনেহ’লে opens the result, and যোৱা is the তুমি form of the verb.

  3. যদি নাজমাৰ ইচ্ছা নাই তেনেহ’লে তাই নাযাব।

If Nazma does not want to, she will not go.

তেনেহ’লে is the longer form of “then”.

  4. যদি তুমি ভাগৰুৱা, তেনেহ’লে অলপ জিৰণি লোৱাঁ।

If you are tired, then take a little rest.

The result can be a command: লোৱাঁ.
