Even if or Even When: -লেও

হ’লেও means “even if it is”.

How It Works

The ending -লেও is the “if” ending -লে plus -ও “also, even”.

It also means “at least” when it follows a small amount: গীতিমণিয়ে দিনত এবাৰ হ’লেও মাকক ফ’ন কৰে “Gitimoni phones her mother at least once a day”. The clause can be just a describing word or a noun with হ’লেও, such as সৰু হ’লেও “even though small”.

Add -ও to the -লে form of any verb: কৰিলেও “even if someone does it”, খালেও “even if someone eats”. The form does not change for the doer, in the same way as -লে.

  1. আৰু একো নহ’লেও মোক এখন চিঠি লিখাঁ।

    If nothing else, at least write me a letter.

    নহ’লেও means “even if not”.

  2. জোনালীয়ে বৰষুণ বেছি নহ’লেও ছাতি লৈ ওলায়।

    Jonali takes an umbrella out even when it does not rain much.

    নহ’লেও follows the clause বৰষুণ বেছি.

  3. গীতিমণিয়ে দিনত এবাৰ হ’লেও মাকক ফ’ন কৰে।

    Gitimoni phones her mother at least once a day.

    হ’লেও after a small amount means “at least”.

  4. ভাত ঠাণ্ডা হৈ গ’লেও মই খাম।

    Even if the rice goes cold, I will eat it.

    গ’লেও follows হৈ: “even if it becomes”.
