তুমি শুই আছিলা নেকি? “were you sleeping?”, and তেওঁলোক শুই আছিল “they were sleeping”.

How It Works

This is the past of কৰি আছোঁ “I am doing”. Only আছোঁ changes to আছিলোঁ, and the first verb stays in the -ি form.

PersonWas doing
মই, আমিশুই আছিলোঁ
তুমিশুই আছিলা
আপুনিশুই আছিলে
সি, তাই, তেওঁশুই আছিল

Compare শুই আছে “is sleeping” and শুই আছিল “was sleeping”. Only the helper changes, from আছে to আছিল. A question uses নেকি: তুমি শুই আছিলা নেকি? “were you sleeping?”. The -ি form is the same one used for linked actions: শো gives শুই and কৰ gives কৰি. The negative is made with থকা নাছিল, which has its own row.

Examples (5)

  1. তুমি শুই আছিলা নেকি?

    Were you sleeping?

    আছিলা matches তুমি, and নেকি makes it a question.

  2. তেওঁলোক শুই আছিল।

    They were sleeping.

আছিল is used for a plural third person too.

  3. ৰাজুৱে তাত কি কৰি আছিল?

    What was Raju doing there?

কৰি আছিল asks what was in progress.

  4. আপুনি শুই আছিলে নেকি?

    Were you sleeping?

With আপুনি the ending is -ে.

  5. জোনালীৰ কেঁচুৱাটো শুই আছিল।

    Jonali's baby was sleeping.

    A third-person subject takes -ল.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a third-person ending with মই.

    মই শুই আছিল।
    মই শুই আছিলোঁ।

The ending -ল is for সি, তাই and তেওঁ. With মই it is -লোঁ.
