The -ি form plus আছ means “is doing now”.

How It Works

PersonFormExample
মই, আমি-ি আছোঁমই শুই আছোঁ
তুমি-ি আছাতুমি কৰি আছা
আপুনি, তেওঁ, সি, তাই-ি আছেতাই গৈ আছে

The -ি form of the verb is its “doing” form. A stem that ends in a consonant adds -ি: কৰ becomes কৰি. A stem that ends in া adds -ই: খা “eat” becomes খাই and চা “look” becomes চাই. A few common verbs change more: শো “sleep” becomes শুই, যা “go” becomes গৈ, ক “say” becomes কৈ, ল “take” becomes লৈ and হ “be” becomes হৈ. The verb দি “give” stays দি, as in বৰষুণ দি আছে “it is raining”.

The second word আছ “be, stay” carries the person. It is the same verb as in কেনে আছা?.

This is the pattern for “right now”. For a habit or a fact, use the simple present: মই চাহ খাওঁ “I drink tea”.
