-ি দিয়া
Doing It for Someone: -ি দিয়া
ক্ষমা কৰি দিয়ক “please forgive”, and ভাস্কৰে মোক কিতাপখন কিনি দিলে “Bhaskar bought me the book”.
How It Works
দিয়া alone means “to give”. After the -ি form it keeps a little of that meaning: the action goes toward another person.
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| কিনি দিলে | bought it for someone |
| খুলি দিলে | opened it for someone |
| কৰি দিয়ক | please do it (for me) |
| বন্ধ কৰি দিলে | closed it, stopped it |
The person who gets the benefit takes -ক: মোক, প্ৰিয়ংকাক. In some sentences there is no other person and দিয়া only shows that the action was done cleanly, as in বন্ধ কৰি দিলে “closed it”. Compare -ি পেলোৱা, which stresses that the action is done completely, and -ি লোৱা, which turns the action toward oneself.
