হয় / অঁ
Saying Yes
Someone asks if you drink tea. Say হয়, মই চাহ খাওঁ. “Yes, I drink tea.”
How It Works
Both words answer a question with “yes”.
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| হয় | the usual “yes”, “that is right” | হয়, মই চাহ খাওঁ। Yes, I drink tea. |
| অঁ | a short, casual “yes” | অঁ, সি ঘৰত আছে। Yeah, he is at home. |
The word অঁ carries the nasal mark ঁ. You will mostly read it in dialogue.
For “no”, use নহয় when you say that something is not so, and নাই when you say that you do not have it or that it is not there. The word হয় can also mean “is” or “becomes”, and the sentence tells you which.
