হয়তো / বোধহয়

Maybe and Probably

Level 5Sounds Like haẏatō / bōdhahaẏa

হয়তো means “maybe”, and বোধহয় means “probably”.

How It Works

These words hedge a statement. হয়তো is usually “maybe” or “might”, and বোধহয় is usually “probably”.

WordMeansExample
হয়তোmaybe, mightআমি এই ঘৰটো হয়তো কেতিয়াও বিক্ৰী নকৰোঁ “we might never sell this house”
বোধহয়probablyনাজমাৰ বোধহয় ভুল হৈছে “Nazma is probably wrong”

Both can stand first in the sentence as well: বোধহয় তুমি আগতীয়াকৈ ওলাই যোৱা উচিত “maybe you should leave early”.

They fit statements about now, later or before: বোধহয় তুমি আগতীয়াকৈ ওলাই যাব লাগিছিল “maybe you should have left early”. Use them to be careful or polite when you do not know. In careful writing, সম্ভৱতঃ “possibly” does the same job.
