Proverb: A Thorn for Others

Level 6Sounds Like ānalai hula puti nijē maraē phuṭi

আনলৈ হুল পুতি নিজে মৰে ফুটি means “if you try to harm another, you harm yourself”.

How It Works

WordsMeaning
আনলৈ“for another, towards another”
হুল পুতি“having planted a thorn”
নিজে“oneself”
মৰে ফুটি“dies pricked”

The ending -ি on পুতি and ফুটি is the “having done” form. It joins actions in a line: plant a thorn, then get pricked. The two halves end on the same sound, পুতি and ফুটি.

In plain words: যিয়ে আনৰ বেয়া কৰিব খোজে, তেওঁৰ নিজৰে বেয়া হয় “whoever wants to harm another is harmed himself”.

The thorn stands for the harm, and the one who gets pricked is the person who planted it. People use the saying as a warning to someone who plans harm for another.
