Proverbs
ফকৰা-যোজনা means “proverb”: ফকৰা-যোজনাবোৰ দৈনন্দিন কথা-বতৰাত প্ৰায়ে ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয় “proverbs are often used in daily talk”.
How It Works
A ফকৰা-যোজনা packs old advice into a few plain words with a steady rhythm, so that anyone in the village can remember it. English has proverbs of the same kind.
Some proverbs are called ডাকৰ বচন, “the sayings of Dak”. Tradition names Dak as the one who spoke them, and they give practical advice about village life, such as cooking rice, farming and the weather.
| Proverb | Rhyme | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| এগুণ চাউল দুগুণ পানী, জল দিবা টানি টানি | পানী / টানি | use twice as much water as rice |
| উত্তৰে গাজিলে জানিবা খৰ, দক্ষিণে গাজিলে মাৰিবা লৰ | খৰ / লৰ | thunder in the north brings no rain; thunder in the south brings plenty |
A proverb keeps its words and its order, so you say it exactly as it is.
